In the age of COVID-19, the concert experience has been irrevocably changed. For some bands, this is just a bummer; for GWAR, it’s a complete clusterfuck. That’s because though GWAR’s albums are great, it’s their blood-drenched live show that has really made them a bucket-list band for so many metalheads. Well, now the Scumdogs of the Universe have found a way around the current bans on mass gatherings by announcing a drive-in show in their hometown of Richmond, Virginia.
GWAR’s drive-in show will go down on on October 10th at the Diamond Drive-In, located at 3001 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd. in Richmond, VA. Lots for the show will open up at 8:30, with GWAR taking the stage at 9:45. The concert will be fully social distanced, so you’ll have to wear a mask when you duck your head out of the window to get your gore facial.
“Denizens of Richmond, Virginia!” declared frontman Blöthar the Berserker in an announcement to pile of dead penguins in Antarctica. “Americans do everything in their cars, and now that will include watching the greatest rock and roll horror show on this or any other planet! Truly, what is October without a global pandemic and the chance to watch GWAR from the comfort of your shitty old hoopty?! Grab a hotdog, slather it in chili, and shove it down your throat as we bring you the pinnacle of entertainment, the ultimate creature feature, live and writhing…all over your windshield!”
Blöthar makes an important point about a GWAR drive-in show: your car is about to become disgusting. Anyone who’s ever witnessed GWAR live knows that part of the experience’s glory is getting a giant neon-green nut busted directly onto your face by a foam-rubber space alien who’s fingering a relevant politician of the time. One assumes that with the scale of a drive-in concert, the band intend to up their jizz canon game, and will bathe row after row of shiny new cars in the stickiest effluvia imaginable.
Tickets for GWAR’s drive-in show go on sale Friday, September 11th.
