War On Woman’s Shawna Potter Discusses The Future of Shock On Our Metal Talk Show, Last Words

On this week’s episode of our metal talk show Last Words, War On Women vocalist Shawna Potter joins hosts Jordan Olds (Two Minutes To Late Night), Katy Irizarry (Season Of Mist), and Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves/Ex Man Podcast) for a round-Zoom discussion of the future of shock rock. The hosts and Shawna discuss Marilyn Manson’s latest single “We Are Chaos,” and whether or not anything is really shocking anymore.

“I have this theory,” says Doc, “that the most shocking thing now…so back in the day, it was like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna rip up the Bible, or drink bats’ blood onstage.’ Or even NWA, and ‘Cop Killer,’ was the shock rock of its day. And now I think the most shocking thing you can do is be a MAGA person. I think that’s what gets the most controversy.

“But the thing that it lacks is that Trump is fundamentally uncool,” he continues. “So even if you’re trying to be a rebel, like, ‘I’m gonna go against this,’ it lacks all the vitality of real shock rockers. Because part of what we know is that you’re just doing it to try and troll people.”

“Nothing pisses me off more than those MAGA dudes saying it’s punk to like Trump,” says Shawna. “That makes me so mad — well, there’s a lot of things that make me mad…”
