You’ve got to love a dude with a pentagram back tattoo who likes to hang from hooks, writhing to thick, nasty riffs — and Matt Zane of Society 1 has always been that dude. Since the late ’90s, the LA-based hard rock quartet have never walked down the doomed ‘everything to everyone’ path, instead creating the kind of black-clad sneer-heavy sleaze metal that most of us secretly hear in our dreams. Now, the band have released a new video for their track “Get Up Again” — and it’s pretty much everything you miss about metal videos.

From the start, “Get Up Again” shows that Society 1 aren’t here to have a conversation. There’s no phoned-in storyline here, no narrative where a kid finds a Society 1 pendant half-buried in the ground and uses it to fend off demon businessmen or some such horseshit. Instead, the band perform a sick song with full-force attitude. Zane in a leather hat? It’s there. Route 666 back patch? You better believe it’s there. In this way, Society 1 are giving us the kind of video people used to see on Headbanger’s Ball all the time. Beavis and Butthead would’ve loved this shit.

“It feels great to finally get the new line up in a proper video,” says Zane of the video. “Within weeks of getting together we were already on the road for the Static X Memorial Tour back in December 2019 and then continued to perform until the night that lockdowns went into place. We didn’t have a lot of time downtime to do videos but now due to the pandemic we have all the time we need since touring is on hold. When we decided to create this we just wanted to create a video that was very abstract and didn’t really take place anywhere in reality. We figured let’s visually escape for this one. Everyone wants a little escape right now including us.”
