Evanescence are planning to release their first album of new original music in nine years, The Bitter Truth, “one piece at a time” across 2020. The first piece was the lead single “Wasted on You,” which the band dropped in April along with the cut’s quarantine-filmed DIY music video. Today (July 1st), the quintet — singer-songwriter-pianist Amy Lee, bassist Tim McCord, drummer Will Hunt, and guitarists Troy McLawhorn, and Jen Majura — unveiled the LP’s second piece, “The Game Is Over.” In contrast to its predecessor’s mellower, piano-focused direction, the new single sees the band leaning into its more rocking side, turning up the guitars over which Lee unleashes her characteristically powerhouse vocals. Check “The Game Is Over” below.
“This song is about being sick of the facade,” the Evanescence bandleader commented of the new single. “The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what’s socially acceptable, or what’s not going to make you unpleasant or too ‘weird’ to be around.
“‘The Game Is Over’ is a promise to myself and out loud that I’m going to be more of my real, inner self on the outside — not lock her up because she can’t be contained anymore. It’s also a prayer to become better, to not feel so messed up, locked up, and hurt inside.”
On Friday, Evanescence will premiere its music video, another self-shot offering, this one a “neon-nightmare,” according to the group. Directed by longtime collaborator P.R. Brown, the clip will first air on July 3rd at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT during a live YouTube premiere complete with a fan Q&A with Lee.
