Thank goodness for Metallica. The band’s “Metallica Mondays” concert series — which has seen the band digging up standout footage of shows from across their career and broadcasting it on the group’s YouTube channel and Facebook page — has been one of the saving graces of the COVID-19 pandemic’s social-distancing restrictions, a great way to pass two-and-a-half hours or so while stuck at home during quarantine. Yesterday (June 8th), the revered quartet revisited their masterful 18-song set from June 18th, 2019, at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England. The concert was notable for the torrential rain that pounded the band, who persevered and never let up, throughout the show. Watch the full performance and check out the setlist below.
The Manchester broadcast marked the 11 entry in the “Metallica Mondays” series. The previous 10 offerings include shows at Slane Castle in Ireland in 2019; Paris’ AccorHotels Arena in 2017; Forum København in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2009; San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in the summer of 2017; Munich, Germany, in 2015; L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon, Michigan, in 1991; House of Vans in London, in 2016; Pannonia Fields II in Nickelsdorf, Austria, in 1991; The Metro in Chicago, Illinois, all the way back in 1983; and Estadio Nacional in Lima, Peru, in 2014.
In addition to the concert series, Metallica have also responded to the coronavirus crisis via their nonprofit organization, All Within My Hands. The band donated “four grants totaling $350,000 to organizations dedicated to assisting those hit hard by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.”
