The ongoing “Metallica Mondays” concert series threw back to the golden age of the Eighties this week. The series has seen Metallica digging up standout footage of shows from across their career and broadcasting it on the group’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, but so far, the concerts have only gone back as far as the early Nineties. Yesterday (May 18th), the thrash pioneers shared video of a rowdy early gig dating back to August 12th, 1983 at the Metro in Chicago, Illinois. The footage was produced and directed by Tom Hilbe of This Town Productions in West Hollywood, California. Watch the full set — and check out the set list, via setlist.fm — below.
“Metallica Mondays” has been a great way for homebound fans to pass two-plus hours amid the social-distancing restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to last night’s broadcast, the series has included eight concerts: at Slane Castle in Ireland in 2019; Paris’ AccorHotels Arena in 2017; Forum København in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2009; San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in the summer of 2017; Munich, Germany, in 2015; L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon, Michigan, in 1991; House of Vans in London, in 2016; and Pannonia Fields II in Nickelsdorf, Austria, in 1991.
In addition to the concert series, the metal icons have also responded to the coronavirus crisis via their nonprofit organization, All Within My Hands. The band donated “four grants totaling $350,000 to organizations dedicated to assisting those hit hard by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.”
