In the three long years since Pittsburgh heavy-music trailblazers Code Orange dropped their breakthrough album, 2017’s critically lauded and Grammy-nominated Forever, they’ve hardly been resting on their laurels. Among many other endeavors, the hard-working quintet dropped an EP featuring guest vocals from Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, unleashed a bizarre NSFW documentary, and wrote a new theme song with WWE wrestler Bray Wyatt. But what the group’s growing legion of fans have really wanted is a new album — and now they’ve got it. The band’s fourth LP overall and third since they changed their name from Code Orange Kids, the 14-track Underneath sees the group taking another major step in their evolution, embracing alt-rock, industrial noise and hip-hop production more than ever, all while still making the darkest and heaviest music of their career to date.
“Underneath is about facing the duality in ourselves as individuals and as a society in an overcrowded, overexposed, all-consuming digital nirvana,” Code Orange’s Jami Morgan said of the album at the time of its initial announcement. “Everyone has a voice and no one’s seems to matter… plummet down the rabbit hole of your deepest fears, anxieties and regrets to confront the monster that has been building underneath.
