Canada’s Beyond Creation have been shredding out forward-thinking extreme music for the past 15 years, accruing experience that all coalesced in the form of their latest album, 2018’s stellar Algorythm, issued via heavy-music stronghold Season of Mist. But just because the quartet is best known for progressive technical death metal doesn’t mean that the band member don’t enjoy any other kinds of music. Far from it, in fact. With that in mind, we talked to Beyond Creation singer-guitarist Simon Girard to find out about some of the songs that he loves that might surprise fans of his band. He had some great picks.
Jamiroquai – “Virtual Insanity”
I especially love that song for the grooves and vibes it contains and also for the disco feel, which is present on a lot of songs from his discography.
Adele – “Skyfall”
Adele is probably my favorite female singer. Her voice is just incredible and she manages very well her tone and dynamics. She also always has incredible musicians playing with her so it makes the music pretty refined.
Queen – “Don’t Stop Me Know”
I’m actually a huge fan of Queen. I think they created genius and unique music — grooves, harmonies, feel, voices, but also the complexity and originality in their compositions.
Biréli Lagrène – Gypsy Project & Friends
Biréli Lagrène is an incredible guitar player, and this album is simply amazing. It contains some long time classics played in the gypsy jazz guitar style. They are also covering some songs by Django Reinhardt, who is still — more than 65 years after his death — one of the best jazz/swing guitarists.
