At its heart, music is all about emotion. Creeping Death know this. The Power Trip–endorsed Texan death-metal crew conjure all sorts of epic and devastating feeling on their acclaimed 2019 debut full-length Wretched Illusions. That being the case, we caught up with guitarist Trey Pemberton to find out what music he listens to for every mood. Read on to find out the songs that the musician turns to when shaking off the morning grogginess, looking for a pick-me-up and more.

When I’m pissed off:
The Marias – “Clueless”

If I’m feeling angry, I want to jam something that’s going to help me relax [and] this track definitely does the trick. Smooth, mellow baselines, drums are solidly in the pocket and the singer’s voice soft yet mesmerizing. Perfect for bringing the blood pressure down a little bit.

When I’m feeling depressed:
Mark Morrison – “Return of the Mack”

No joke, this is my favorite song of all time. Once the beat starts and the vocals kick in, I just can’t contain a smile and I immediately start dancing no matter where I’m at. There’s a reason we use the song as a sample at the end of our set — good vibes just radiate from wherever you hear it being played.

When I get up in the morning:
Prince – “Let’s Go Crazy”

I’m typically an early riser, so jamming in the morning is a fairly common occurrence. I love throwing Prince on in those moments because there are so many upbeat energetic tracks that just put me in the mindset to get up and get what I need accomplished that day. You always wanna start your day off in a good mood, you feel me?

When I go to bed:
Title Fight – “Murder Your Memory”

I usually like to sleep in complete silence, but sometimes late night in the van I’ll put my headphones in and throw on Title Fight’s Hyperview from the top and let it play. Title Fight has always been one of my favorite bands, and even though Hyperview is a departure from earlier material, I still love it and it’s perfect to listen to on those long, restless nights.

When I’m hungover:
none

This one is tough because believe it or not, I’ve never had a hangover. I’ve just never been that big of a drinker, but I’ve seen enough friends have them to get the idea! They all ask for the same things: food, beverages and silence. So for all my hungover homies out there, my go to hangover song is me turning the volume off and listening to you snore while you wish you didn’t drink as much as you did the night before.

When I’m getting it on:
Sza – Ctrl

This was one of my favorite R&B albums from 2017, and it’s still in personal rotation today. I know I’m supposed to pick one song, but trust me it’s just easier to throw it on shuffle and do your thing.

Song I most want to be remembered for:
Creeping Death – “Ripping Through Flesh”

Right now I’d say “Ripping Through Flesh” because the opening riff is one of my favorite Creeping Death riffs ever. Honestly though, I’d like to think that the song I want to be remembered for hasn’t been written yet. I think we as a band still have a lot of room to grow and become better musicians and songwriters.

Song I wish I wrote:
Blood Red Throne – “Come Death”

Blood Red Throne is definitely my favorite death-metal band and the band that first really made me want to attempt to play death metal. There are so many riffs that just blow my mind, but I chose this track because this is the one that got me hooked to the band. The break at around two minutes will make you want to break your neck.

Song I want played at my funeral:
Mark Morrison – “Return of the Mack”

There will be no crying or lamenting at my funeral. We turning up and having a good time! No exceptions!
