Last year, Evanescence teamed with the Xbox video game franchise Gears of War for a dramatic cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Their theatrical take on the 1977 classic appeared in the game and in its trailer before finally being released as a standalone single via all digital streaming platforms in November. Now, the band has offered up an equally dramatic and theatrical music video for the single, which follows singer Amy Lee and her bandmates as they perform the song in “a post-apocalyptic world” and “walk through the fire together,” as the group described the clip on Twitter. The clip, directed by P.R. Brown, strikingly concludes with Evanescence drummer Will Hunt’s kit in flames, a seeming nod to 2019’s Knotfest México, where fans rioted, stormed the stage and set Hunt’s set on fire.
“This cover was so fun to make,” Lee commented in the video’s description on YouTube. “We love Fleetwood Mac and wanted to paint a dark and epic picture with our take on The Chain. The lyrics make me feel the power of standing together against great forces trying to pull us apart, perhaps even from the inside. I really wanted to drive that home in our version, and even made everyone in the band sing by the end of it! We’re beyond excited to share this with you and I’m really looking forward to playing it live.”
Evanescence are reportedly set to record new original music early this year, and in April they will hit the road on a European co-headlining run, dubbed “Worlds Collide,” with Dutch symphonic-metal juggernaut Within Temptation.
