Polyphia’s Clay Gober: My Dream Supergroup

Texan progressive-metal crew Polyphia are a supergroup unto themselves. Instrumental virtuosos, they shred like nobody’s business — just crank up their last album, 2018’s New Levels New Devils, which incorporates elements of pop, EDM, funk and more into the group’s sound, to see what we mean. The band’s two guitarists, Tim Henson and Scott LePage, also popped up last year on Babymetal’s “Brand New Day,” a standout on the kawaii-metal duo’s hit Metal Galaxy album, and, of course, the group toured relentlessly.

But Polyphia aren’t just a musical supergroup: They’re also a trolling supergroup that, individually and collectively, will take on anyone: haters, lovers, Falling in Reverse’s Ronnie Radke, their own fans. Tongue-in-cheek hypebeasts, they regularly wear the most ridiculous streetwear imaginable and pose for band photos like they’re rappers. Considering the band’s status as a supergroup in multiple realms, we tracked down Polyphia’s own Clay Gober ahead of the group’s upcoming European dates (see below) to find out what players he would enlist for his dream musical assemblage — he had some great picks, including one very much befitting a member of a band that gives so few fucks.

DIMEBAG DARRELL

On guitar.

CHRIS CORNELL

Singing.

ANDERSON .PAAK

On drums.

ME

On bass because I could absolutely not miss out on that shit. We would only play Prince songs, but the encore would ALWAYS be “Careless Whisper.”
