Rage — the grizzled, hard-hitting veterans led by Peter “Peavy” Wagner — emerged in the Eighties as part of the German speed-metal and power-metal scene alongside groups such as Helloween, Grave Digger and Blind Guardian. True defenders of the faith, the band are still going strong. In fact, they’re gearing up to drop their 24th! — yes, you read that correctly — album, Wings of Rage, on January 10th via Steamhammer/SPV. (You can pre-order it here.) Ahead of the big release day, we caught up with Peavy to look back at the albums that made the biggest impact on him, both as a dedicated musician and a diehard fan. Of course, he had some great picks — see below.

1. Motörhead – Ace of Spades

This brought me to play bass guitar. Lemmy and his Rickenbacker was just sooo coool.

2. Judas Priest – British Steel

That simple but heavy riffing was a big inspiration for us metal kids back then!

3. The Police – Regatta de Blanc

As a songwriter, it impressed me mostly how this band had stripped down their arrangements to the minimum, still it was highly energetic and effective.

4. Venom – Black Metal

Coming from a Catholic family, this dark and satanic stuff promised the real freedom from my paren’s repressions! However lousy it was played, it always rocked the shit out of my stereo!

5. Rush – Moving Pictures

This album pulled me into progressive rock. Besides all technical skills, the songs are always spreading a high spirit.
