Non-stop between now and November 30th, Alice in Chains are playing a continuous “virtual battle concert” in the multiplayer video games AdventureQuest 3D and AQWorlds. Players are able to fight monsters and score loot all while watching the band perform songs such as “Check My Brain” and those on the Seattle rock veterans’ most recent album Rainier Fog. When the limited-time event ends, it is gone forever. Alice in Chains’ summer tour mates Korn recently played a similar concert — featuring a three-song set list of “Freak on a Leash,” “You’ll Never Find Me” and “Rotting in Vain” — in the two games.
Both AdventureQuest 3D and AQWorlds are free to get, and the battle concert is free for all players to enjoy. The show, which repeats over and over again with a brief intermission in between each set, features a monster-filled mosh pit led by the Stage Monster, a.k.a. the Ghost of Unsung Songs. During the concert she summons monsters into the pit and creates havoc — players who defeat her will receive a giant treasure chest. Players can also buy the Alice in Chains item collection in game; it includes exclusive band armors, musical items, pets, weapons, travel forms, rare badges and a backstage pass. The pass allows player to head backstage and snap a virtual selfie with the virtual band.
Alice in Chain’s appearance in AdventureQuest 3D and AQWorlds is just the latest nontraditional promotion for the band in support of Rainier Fog. The group previously released a sci-fi/horror feature film, Black Antenna, split up into 10 episodes, each corresponding to a different song off the album.
