Marilyn Manson is, of course, a master of transformation — from Alice Cooper–worshipping shock rocker to Public Enemy No. 1 to hermaphroditic alien to debauched goth Weimar Berlin revivalist to the Mephistopheles of Los Angeles and beyond. Today, October 18th, he’s undergone another sharp turn, this time into a dark country folk with a grim, snarling rendition of the American traditional “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” Also known as “Run On” and “Run On for a Long Time,” the song has previously been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley (as “Run On”) and, of course Johnny Cash, whose immortal performance can be heard on 2006’s posthumously released American V: A Hundred Highways. Manson’s version follows in a similar vein as the latter’s, gravelly and solemn, with more than a little menace, too.
Manson’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” comes accompanied by a big-screen-ready black & white video filmed in Joshua Tree, California, and directed by Tim Mattia. It sees the Antichrist Superstar out in the desert, in a noirish motel room and out in the wilds, digging what appears to be a grave for himself. Watch it below. The single is available for pre-order now on limited pressing picture disc featuring one of Manson’s original watercolor paintings. Manson is currently on the road — you can also see his upcoming live dates below.
