Swedish prog outfit Opeth may have just celebrated their 30th anniversary as a band, but they’re showing no signs of slowing down. They recently released their latest full-length In Cauda Venenum (in two different versions: one in Swedish, and one in English) and have just announced a 2020 North American tour in support of the new album alongside labelmates and fellow Swedish rockers Graveyard.

Bandleader Mikael Åkerfeldt, who is currently at home practicing new and old material in preparation, says of the coming tour, “it’s funny how our music lies dormant in the muscle memory. There are songs I haven’t played for years, and there [sic] still there somehow. I put together the skeleton of a setlist and looking at it there’s some niceties in there. I hope.” Continuing the subtle Swedish humor, he adds, “Touring in North America is always a treat. We all collectively look forward to it. Hope you are too!”

Åkerfeldt’s relationship with touring isn’t always so wonderful, especially since becoming a father 15 years ago. In a recent chat with The Pit, he admitted long stints on the road affect his and his bandmates’ mental health, and while he loves to be on stage and playing music, he claims: “If I could just be a Brian Wilson type guy and stay at home and write music, I would do it without batting an eyelid.”

Along with the tour announcement, the band has partnered with Decibel magazine for their Decibel Flexi Series and are streaming an exclusive, unreleased track titled “Cirkelns Riktning.” Listen to that here.

Tickets for Opeth’s North American 2020 tour will go on sale 10 a.m. local time on Friday, October 4th, and as always, they’re gonna go fast. See below to catch the band when they’re near your town.
