Canadian heavy-metal crew Kobra and the Lotus recently released their sixth album Evolution (which is available for streaming and purchase here), which sees frontwoman Kobra Paige leaning into the full range of her musical influences with her emotive and bombastic vocals. And those musical influences do range wide, indeed. Ahead of the new record’s release, we caught up with the singer to ask her what five songs she loves that might surprise fans of her band — and she did not disappoint.

Michael Jackson – “They Don’t Care About Us”

MJ is a rhythmic, musical god and, to me, no one has ever put the magic into the feel of music the way he did.

Fleetwood Mac – “Rhiannon”

Oh man, I just love Stevie [Nicks] and their harmony layers … It’s timeless and soothing.

Spirit Of The West – “Home for a Rest”

In Canada we have a big, warm Celtic culture on the East Coast. This song reminds me of growing up and dancing with other kids at the summer Folk Festival. It’s a perfect track to bring us back home after a tour!

Jeff Buckley – “Grace”

It’s stunning. I love the guitar. I love his voice. I’m sad he passed on so early.

Sia – “Elastic Heart”

I love the sound of her voice and the messages in her music. I find her unique and empowering. I relate to this track and feel like it is just about me as it is for her. I also appreciate that she chooses to hide her identity as a tribute to putting some mystery back into artistry.
