It doesn’t get much heavier or more badass than Amon Amarth, those hirsute Swedish Viking-metal warmongers who specialize in mead-swilling, battle-axe–raising anthems and have delivered in spades over the past quarter century. The militant horde celebrated their long, illustrious career late last year with the release of the in-depth documentary The Pursuit of Vikings: 25 Years in the Eye of the Storm, and now they’re kicking off their next chapter with the skull-crushing ripper “Raven’s Flight,” the lead single off Amon Amarth’s forthcoming album Berserker. How it took the band 11 studio full-length to use that title we’ll never know, but better late than never, and judging from the hard-charging riffs and epic lyrics of “Raven’s Flight,” the LP will more than live up to its name.
Frontman Johan Hegg roars on the song: “We’re heading west to distant shores/To avenge our father and to win the throne/They think their god will save their skin/But all resistance will be in vain/We stare at death with crimson grins/With odin’s help we cannot fail/We hold our heads up to the sky/And know that we will never die/As long as we stand side by side/As long as we can see the ravens fly!”
Berserker is scheduled for release May 3rd via Metal Blade Records. See the album’s full track listing below.
