It’s been an amazing year for Okilly Dokilly, viral sensations and the world’s only “Nedal” band, specializing in a heavy-metal subgenre of their own creation, themed around Simpson character Ned Flanders. They released their sophomore album, Howdilly Twodilly, in March, toured in support of the record throughout the following month and, on April 7th, fulfilled their destiny by appearing during the closing credits of an episode of The Simpsons, titled “I’m Just a Girl Who Can’t Say D’oh.” (The animated sitcom aired an extended excerpt of the group’s “White Wine Spritzer” music video, which now has over 5 million views on YouTube and counting.) We recently caught up with Okilly Dokilly’s singer, Head Ned, to congratulate him on all this, and to ask him a very important question: What musicians, alive or dead, would make up the ultimate Nedal supergroup. Here’s who he picked.

BILLY CORGAN (GUITAR)

“Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins.” “Homer Simpson, smiling politely.” With lyrics like “Emptiness is loneliness and loneliness is cleanliness and cleanliness is godliness, and God is friendly, just like me” — or, at least I think that’s how it goes — Mr. Corgan would be essential to a Nedal supergroup.

PAUL MCCARTNEY (BASS)

Us Neds are mighty big Beatles fans. Our rider always includes a case of John Lemon and a bottle of Orange Harrison. That said, our pick for bass would have to be Sir Paul McCartney. It’s heavily supported by his and his late wife Linda McCartney’s appearance in the “Lisa the Vegetarian” episode.

WEIRD AI YANKOVIC (ACCORDION)

Weird Al is not only a comedy and musical powerhouse and a huge influence on Okilly Dokilly, but his appearance in the “Three Gays of the Condo” episode was excellent. There’s also no instrument more brutalino than the accordion.

JACK WHITE AND MEG WHITE (DRUMS)

The “Jazzy and the Pussycats” episode has a great reference to the “Hardest Button to Button” music video, where Bart’s drum kit crashes into the White Stripes’ kit. It was one of my favorite scenes and I would gladly add both Jack and Meg White as drummers to my ultimate Nedal supergroup. The Blue Man Group also appears in this episode and I would not be against having the entire Blue Man Group as an added percussion ensemble.

JOHNNY CASH (VOCALS)

I have to round out my Nedal supergroup with the deep baritone vocals of the Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash. Though his appearance is not musical, Cash’s appearance as the space coyote in the episode “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer” stands out as one of my favorite appearances in one of my favorite episodes. I’ve always thought that any Nedal band could use a space coyote.

HONORABLE MENTION: SPINAL TAP

Us Neds are big fans of Spinal Tap. When we toured the U.K., we visited Stonehenge and brought a mandolin, so we could play the Stonehenge song at Stonehenge. I’m particularly a fan of their bassist. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about him that seems like he would make a good Nedal band addition.
